SentoVox is a large-scale, scientifically grounded visitor study for performing arts venues. It was developed with a consortium of European universities and is supported by sector organisations. It helps theatres, concert halls and cultural centres to understand their audiences, strengthen their offer and demonstrate their social value.
SentoVox grew out of a simple observation: performing arts venues need reliable insight into their audiences, but rarely have the time and resources for research of their own. Sento Group, which already organises large-scale audience research for museums (Sentomus) and libraries (Sentobib), therefore worked with academic partners to develop a method tailored to theatres, concert halls and cultural centres.
The pilot study involved more than 130 cultural institutions in Flanders and the Netherlands, in partnership with sector organisations such as cult! and the VSCD. More than 60,000 visitors shared their views, and around 80 percent of respondents completed the questionnaire in full. That confirmed the value of an accessible method that still offers real depth.
Today SentoVox is growing into a European study. The questionnaire follows a common European standard, adapted to the national context of each country, so that participating venues can compare themselves anonymously against similar venues at home and abroad.
The study design and questionnaire were developed and supported by academic partners, sector organisations and professionals from the field.
From intimate theatres to large concert halls and community centres: these venues took part in the SentoVox study.
